Two brothers will do whatever it takes to hide a body and inherit a fortune in this laugh-out-loud crime caper

Elderly Joseph and Masterman Finsbury are the last survivors of a tontine established in their youth. Their nephews, Morris and John, have one simple goal Keep Uncle Joseph alive longer than Uncle Masterman. If they succeed, the brothers will be set for life. If they fail, the fortune goes to cousin Michael—and poverty will be their fate.

When the siblings regain consciousness after a train wreck, they discover that Joseph—or a man dressed exactly like him—died in the crash. Not to worry; Morris has a plan. Instead of burying the body where anyone might dig it up, they’ll ship it around the world until Uncle Masterman dies. It seems foolproof, until the incorrect package arrives at the first destination and Morris and John have to find poor, dead Uncle Joseph before somebody opens the wrong box.

The Wrong Box edition by Lloyd Osbourne Robert Louis Stevenson Otto Penzler Literature Fiction eBooks

I love all the Robert Louis Stevenson books I've ever read, so was looking forward to this reprint. The description DID say it was a comedy, but it was extremely absurd, like watching a Keystone Cops movie. Also, I don't remember having to look up so many words in Treasure Island or Kidnapped, but I sure found myself looking up a lot of words in this book. Here's a few: Bodlieian research, tontine system, lucubrations, emolument, polyglot Testament, defalcation, fallacious Caledonian, water-butt, spirit-lamp, char-a-banc, rotatory argument, inchoate, quadragenarian torso, adminicles of misery, cicerone character, inappropriate exordium, vesta, key wards, catarrh, wherry, exiguous pipe, cornet-a-piston, pretermitted, rheum, got tick, and more! It did strike me as funny that Englishmen were speaking an English that I couldn't understand. But overall I was disappointed with how absurd and unentertaining this comedy was. I think it must have been written mostly by Stevenson's step-son Lloyd Osbourne, with Stevenson merely allowing his name to be used for promotional purposes. Mostly a very boring read.

Fun read
waste of time
A British 19th c. Unusual mystery with many twists and turns. A tongue in cheek approach which adds a comedic touch.
This book is hilarious -- I have loved it since I first read it in the 60s. This edition is typographically not very good -- crowded print and little white space, but better than nothing.
