Off Kilter is the first of a new series set in the Scottish Highlands.Eden Elliott has had a very bad year starting with a divorce and ending with the loss of her mother following a long illness. When her best friend, Ami, springs a round-trip ticket to Scotland, she really doesn't want to go but gives in to her friend's urging that she use the opportunity to work on her first novel.
Eden quickly becomes embroiled is a difficult family situation and a murder and isn't always sure whom to trust and whom to suspect and that could just cost her life.
I like these characters a lot. Eden is very well-realized. She's a little bit older than the usual cozy heroine and is a good combination of intelligence and strength with a bit of self-doubt. The supporting characters are each very distinct and there's room for a lot of development in future stories. And you also have to add the Scottish Highlands as a character in its own right - the descriptions really bring it to life.
This is an excellent first installment and I am really looking forward to the next visit to Glenkillen.

I thought this book was fantastic! I loved the Scottish Highlands setting and the wonderful description of the town, the fields, the sea and the winding roads. There were plenty of believable and interesting characters that kept the story moving along and kept me guessing.
I loved the description of the Scottish food, the crazy driving and the Scottish sayings. This book had plenty of red herrings, a few suspenseful moments and plenty of twists and turns. I can't wait to read about Eden's next adventure! What a great, great start to a delightful series! I can't recommend it enough!
I was drawn to this book because I love all things Scotland and it has provided the Scottish atmosphere and details I was looking for. As to the heroin - whoever thought she was on the old side for a cozy mystery? I guess they have never heard of Ms. Marple. In any event, I didn't find her terribly interesting. Her discussions with herself about writing - not engaging. The mystery itself was pretty good and my major problem with it was the lawyer loose end. He appeared to be one of the bad guys and got away with lying and cheating, but his story was just left hanging.
I will read one more of this author's books before I make a final decision about her.
What fun to read a Scottish cozy! Was attracted to it as my ancestors were mostly Scots. This one has a good, well plotted story line with interesting characters that are well written and keep your interest. The heroine of the story receives a gift of six months paid in the Highlands! Wow...found myself wishing it could have been me! I totally enjoyed this book and was a little sad when I knew it was coming to a conclusion. The culprit was a total surprise...I had figured two other characters...always nice when I can't figure out "who done it". Will really look forward to reading more in this series.
When I started, I didn't think I would finish. It didn't feel 'solid'- a little too much like a better and updated Nancy Drew that I read as a kid in the 50s. But it caught me up and I inhaled it at the end. A really decent read and I will check out the next installment.
I am a JD Scott fan. Love the Highland Gazette series she writes. But, I love Scotland and thought I would give this author a try. Doesn't hold a candle to JD Scott. Found it silly and predictable. Written for a teenager. Only good for reading when you are on the beach and don't want something complex to read.
I love the 'cozy' genre so I get it that we aren't expecting high art, but even so this is so-so and not great. I've (tried to) read worse, to be fair. But the characters don't have any real depth and plot demands that the main character get Really unnerved by everyday things, like driving, which is talked about a lot... The main character also performs actions like moving bales of hay for a person who she hates and wouldn't be obligated to do anything for, just so the plot can have her end up in the hospital. So the main character comes across as pathetic and you really don't root for her. As others said, that might be forgiven if the description of the locale really immersed you but she (again, the main character) just describes it as breathtaking without really making you feel it. Meh.
This is the first book in a series of cozies set in the Scottish highlands. It follows a familiar formula with an amateur detective who has just arrived in the new surroundings, newly single. Not much in this book is memorable. The characters are light, the dialog is light, the description is light, and the romance is light. I had hoped that it would have a strong sense of place, but it does not. Scotland in this book is not as fully rendered as the settings in books by Ann Cleeves, Paul Doiron, Tony Hillerman, Cara Black, Martin Walker, Jean Luc Bannalec, or Elly Griffiths for example. It is not in the same class of mystery. I am not interested in the continuing characters or the writing style so it is unlikely that I will read more of the series.
