Chocolates in the Ocean edition by Eva O'Reilly Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

A fantastic debut- full of beautiful, thoughtful descriptions, believable characters and a satisfying ending! Highly recommended for all lovers of romance and fiction
Really enjoyed this! The best thing I have to say about Chocolates in the Ocean is how relaxing it was to read. My life is pretty chaotic but with reading this, I felt everything slow down and it was amazing. Not a romance, not much conflict, but it works. Descriptions of food, the house, the community - I want to visit! And I desperately want a Great Dane puppy now!! I have comments on the ending but don't want to make a spoiler, but I will say I like the way it finished. And that we still don't know your name! If I ever feel a need to run away, I really hope I can have someplace like Anne's house to run to.
Chocolates in the Ocean is a lovely place to spend several days. I found myself longing to be done with whatever I was doing so I could curl up with it again. The prose is graceful and rhythmic. It pulled me right in. And the book takes you to a small town by the sea in Denmark filled with down-to-earth people and scrumptious food. Not much happens there. If you’re looking for action, this isn’t the book for you. This isn’t exactly a romance either. It’s the story of a woman trying to recover from a bad relationship that has left her pregnant. Anne deals with this by impulsively buying a house much too big for her and then deciding to turn it into a refuge for other women recovering from bad relationships. It takes you through all forty weeks of her pregnancy with all the accompanying physical and emotional ups and downs while she works on fixing up the house and thinks a lot, about herself, relationships, and love. Even though not much happens, and most of what does seems a happy dream of food and gardens and nice people, even a big friendly dog and a sexy musician, there is constant tension. O’Reilly maintains the tension through an interesting stylistic device. The story is told in first person and addressed directly to the ex-lover, the father of the child growing inside Anne. She addresses him with anger, regret, longing, all sorts of mixed-up feelings. So there’s a fragility to all her joys because I just knew he would eventually show up and trash her dreams. I won’t tell you what happens. You’ll have to read the book to find out.

I was given a review copy of this book.
I liked the setting of the story in the quaint little town. I liked the characters. It was a bit monotonous with all the emotions about the ex. Halfway through I read the last chapter to see the ending. If I liked it I would continue reading. It was ok, but I decided not to spend time reading the emotional roller coaster to the end.
Perhaps chocolates bound to an ocean are as unlikely as woman bound to man. Certainly the protagonist of Eva O’Reilly’s Chocolates in the Ocean has no desire to bind herself to man – the mysterious “you” of her first-person narration. Anne’s tortured feelings of love, betrayal and rejection are like a worn-out house awaiting repair. And it’s pleasing to see the protagonist repairing herself as she tells her story of reconstructing a once-loved building and garden. Making plans, seeing roof and bathrooms rebuilt, and dreaming of offering the hope to others that she might want for herself, Anne slowly opens up to new possibilities and change. But which dreams will survive, and which will prove as fickle as the past?

Filled with vividly real descriptions of Copenhagen, Danish island life, coffee shops and characters, Chocolates in the Ocean is an enjoyable, relaxing, absorbing read, with that intriguingly jarring note of “you” and past betrayals to inspire introspection and keep the reader on their toes. Endlessly surprising, in beginning, middle and end, it's probably not a novel to skim.

Disclosure The author gave me a copy and I offer my honest review.
I really enjoyed the book. Although it is a genre, I would not normally read, I couldn't put it down once I started it.
A great story with interesting characters and a really good description of the environment and the mood surrounding the main character, that keeps you engaged and eager to find out more.
What a beautiful story of Anne’s personal evolution, with some unexpected complications. I really feel close to the characters. Truly. It left me wanting more. Oh! I would certainly love to visit Anne, if to sample her wonderful creations!
Enjoyed a lot got my book club to read it. Lots of positive feedback.
