Dialogue of Life A Christian Among Allah Poor Bob McCahill 9781570750663 Books
A collection of writings that reflect the experiences of a remarkable man who moved on from his Midwestern upbringing to spend his entire adult life helping the poorest of the poor obtain the basic needs of life, living and being one of those poor. This is a collection of vignettes that demonstrate what that actually means - in the trenches, sharing the lifestyle of rural Bangladeshis for 40 years and helping make individual lives better when possible. Each vignette brings the reader into the life of a Bangladeshi, and into the life of this Maryknoll whose interactions give us a new thought, or a new perspective, or a clarification of our existing perspectives. A must read, made more readable by the simple fact that the vignettes are short and can be read independently in short snatches of time.Tags : Dialogue of Life: A Christian Among Allah's Poor [Bob McCahill] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Dialogue of Life A Christian Among Allah Poor Bob McCahill 9781570750663 Books Reviews
A wonderful man's journey through one of the poorest countries. Mr. McCahill shows that true compassion disolves all differences.
What McCahill does with the poor of Bangladesh is noble and exemplary, and indeed is an imitation of Jesus' incarnational ministry He left his throne in heaven to come down to earth to live among us. So he left his comfortable America to live among the poor. I give him two thumbs up in this.
However, it is lamentable that he lacks a full understanding of Biblical theology of missions. Yes, Jesus calls numerous times for his disciples to care for the poor. But more important than that, he also commands his followers to "make disciples of all nations" (Matt 2819-20), to proclaim his message until the ends of earth.
And missionary works is not about trying to "convert" adherents of other religions to Christianity. It is about proclaiming the good news to the people the good news of deliverance, forgiveness, and assurance of eternal life that Jesus offers, regardless of the recipient's response.
I think missionaries would feel insulted by his comment that they were motivated by "selfish greed" in p. 4. If they were, they could just stay in corporate America and make big $$$ and live the American dream. But instead, they choose to leave the all the comfort behind to serve people in need.
If you are a Christian who believes in the authority of the Bible, and is interested in missions, this book is not for you, because its theological foundation is not in line with the Bible.
If you think I'm a bigot, please excuse me. Without any arrogant intent, I'm just trying to be faithful to true Biblical teachings--which I cherish so much, and present it as it really is.
The man is a pluralist and yet a very devout Christian. I've done several short term mission trips to Bangladesh as a physician. I've met this man and I've lived in villages where life goes on very much as he describes. He is very accurate and compassionate in describing the life of the poor in rural and semi-rual Bangladesh. This is a very good introduction into a theology of non-evangelistic missions. I don't completely agree with him, but I think anyone contemplating missions in an Islamic context should read this book and ponder his message carefully.
Fr. McCahill should be recognized as a living saint for the life he leads in Bangladesh for almost the last 40 years. Hopefully he is still alive and active in this way--at least he was in 2015 as shown by a U-tube video. This book describes the life he lives and the people he comes in contact with. A truly holy man.
Bob McCahill in this book gives you a window into the lives of Bangladesh Muslims. He lives his Christian message of Love daily among these people without trying to convert them. The people of Bangladesh who do not believe in altruism are suspicious of his generous giving of self to them. They cannot understand why he would want to do all that he is doing just for them. His work has helped to change the negative view of Bangladesh Muslims about Christians. This book in my opinion should be called "The Diary of a Christ-like Man." It is a day to day account of how one man tries to be Christ-like among non-Christians. You would enjoy every page of this book.
