This 5th book in the Guild Hunter series begins immediately following the conclusion of “Archangel’s Blade” with the wedding of Dimitri and Honor. In an effort to prevent revenge-fueled attacks upon other archangel’s territories by a grief-stricken Neha, Raphael offers Jason’s services to her as an impartial investigator into the murder. Since Neha had imprisoned her husband, in “solitary confinement,” some 300 years earlier for having an affair with and impregnating her sister, the number of suspects should be minimal and the investigation quick.

Even though Neha despises Raphael, he is the Chief Archangel and she accepts his offer – with conditions. She demands that Jason submit to a blood bond with her niece, Mihaya, for the duration of the investigation so as to prevent territorial secrets from being relayed to Raphael.

Mihaya happens to be the daughter produced by the illicit affair. Neha executed Mihaya’s mother (also Neha’s sister) immediately following the birth and has used Mihaya as a weapon against Eris and as a literal whipping post for most of her life. Now that Eris is dead, Mihaya essentially serves no further purpose for Neha.

No one, not Raphael nor Jason nor Mihaya, has any doubt that Neha means to extract her vengeance and salve her grief by killing Jason and Mihaya on a “technicality” of violating the blood bond. But then the beaten and eviscerated bodies of courtiers close to Neha begin to literally fall from the sky, the balconies, and the cliff sides. Now the game has changed for everyone.

As in each of the previous novels, Nalini Singh’s description of the Archangel World is rich and detailed, from buildings to rooms to clothing. And all the characters – major, secondary and incidental alike – are physically fleshed out from their hair to their boots.

Taken together, the animate and the inanimate, these descriptions are so full that the reader can visualize the action as if watching a video instead of reading a book. One can almost hear the hiss of the coiling snakes, see the green and black flames shooting across the sky and feel the touch of a hand on an arm.

But it is Singh’s style of expressing the character’s emotions that make the story a fulfilling read. Her explorations of hate, revenge, reason versus excuse, and the mental subtleties that differentiate between “damaged” and “broken” are sometimes uncomfortably blunt but never preachy. Her use of internal monologue positioned between the sentences, sometimes even between the words, of an ongoing dialogue keep the reader clear on characters’ motivations.

The major crisis and the ending of the book fall in place naturally, though not predictably, with the beginning and the middle. References to events and conversations from previous books in the series are consistent and repeated accurately, no artistic license being taken with the timeline or previously established characterizations.

The story ends cleanly, no cliffhanger. But it is clear that the major characters of this book will reappear in future books as major supporting characters for other members of Raphael’s Seven and Elena’s Guild.

Archangel’s Storm was better than I anticipated since I wasn’t invested in either lead character. It is the story of Jason – Raphael’s traumatized, introverted, commitment/relationship phobic spymaster- and Mahiya - the abused yet untraumatized daughter of the Archangel Neha’s twin sister Nivriti and Neha’s Consort/husband Eris – so… awkward.

We knew from previous installments that Neha’s Consort went missing about 300 years ago and lots of gossip and speculation surrounded the disappearance. Only Jason the Spymaster knew that Eris was really imprisoned by Neha – that is – until Eris was murdered. Seeing Neha on the edge of madness, Raphael and his crew worry that she'll go Archangel bat-poop crazy and have a cataclysmic, raining down devastation meltdown. So Raphael offers his help – the skills of Jason to unearth the murderer. However in order for Jason to be allowed in Neha’s court he must bind himself to Neha – so he can’t be privy to all her secrets and then run tattling to Raphael. Raphael is definitely not down with that but they strike a compromise where Jason will swear a blood vow to the princess (in name only) Mahiya – which would make him “family and bound to protect that family’s interests” for as long as the vow is in effect – which would be until Jason found the murderer and got his butt out of Neha’s territory.

Jason and Mahiya have a very slow build, slow burn romance. There is noting wrong with either of them; but again, I didn’t really feel the chemistry. I notice I’ve been saying that a lot lately – so I’m willing to entertain the theory that it really isn’t ALL of these books, romances, couples that are lacking – it really must be me. Jason is supposed to be a “dangerous hero” in that he is an “enemy spymaster” but other than Mahiya occasionally reminding me of that I really don’t get how (to quote Elena) he’s a “seriously bad-butt (well that's not exactly what she says, but it's probably what the profanity filter will let me get away with) man that a sensible woman would run screaming from”. He does however have a cool tattoo over half his face so that counts for something. Mahiya is a strong heroine, determined to retain her spirit and not be broken by the occasional horror of her existence.

I did however really enjoy the murder mystery of “who killed Eris” and the complications of who’s killing everyone at Neha’s court as the bodies start piling up. As Jason conducts his investigation, with Mahiya tagging along to keep an eye on him – he realizes that although she tries to camouflage her intelligence, she is more than just a court trinket. I’m not exactly sure what Mahiya sees in Jason other than the fact that he’s incredibly damaged in a way that makes you want to take him home, bake him cookies and hug it out.

There’s a Venom guest appearance. I really hope we get to his story and that it isn’t ruined by a traditional romance like Dmitri’s was. Dmitri started out as a passable "mad, bad and dangerous to know bad-butt” (I know it sounds ridiculous) and now that he and Honor are all cozy-ed up, he’s your typical traditional romantic hero – "booor-ring". Speaking of which – there are a few interspersed chapters from Dmitri’s point of view of he and Honor navigating her transformation. There’s brief mention of Lijuan – who undoubtedly will turn up in future installments – frolicking about in her psycho power hungry burn the world caper. So all in all a decent installment.
